How to snorkel:from the best equipment to useful advice for those who want to make the most of the practice ofsnorkeling.

It's summer: there is a sea air and holidays, you just need theequipmentright to make every day at the beach an unforgettable experience, full of charm and passion ... yes, passion for the seabed. Practicalsnorkelingfrom the age of 4, it might seem premature to you but it is precisely for my fourth birthday that I received one as a gift mask and a snorkel ... essential tools for those who want to snorkel, yes, it is also essential to know how to swim. On this page he will give you manyadviceuseful and I'll explain like snorkeling so as to fully appreciate your days at the beach.

Snorkeling: essential equipment

L'equipmentto dosnorkelingit is not very expensive, however I advise you not to skimp on the price for the purchase of a good mask. What do you need for snorkeling?

  • A mask
  • An aerator orsnorkel
  • Fins (recommended)

To choose a good mask for snorkeling, you can follow the tips I gave you in the guide dedicated to how to choose a diving mask, on the page you will find all the tips for not making your mask fog up while swimming underwater.

As for the aerator (orsnorkel English term from which the name of this practice derives!), on the market there are smooth models or models with corrugated mouthpiece. When you choose it, know that the recommended dimensions are 25/30 cm in length and 20/25 mm in diameter… always choose an aerator with a soft rubber mouthpiece so it will adapt better to the size of your mouth.

The aerator must be held by the strap of the mask, you must position it so that it remains well above the surface of the water. Nothing difficult: most snorkels have a special tab that must be placed right on the elastic (strap) of the mask.

Not everyone recommends fins but… in my opinion they are indispensable especially if you want to swim over long distances or descend quickly in apnea. During the apnea phase, the mouthpiece must be removed from the mouth and put back on the surface, after having purged it with a strong exhalation.

As for the fins, there are longer, shorter, softer, more rigid ... with an open fit (you will have to tighten the strap well otherwise you risk losing them) or with a closed fit (they must be worn on the bare foot). When you choose them, give priority to the well-being of the fit: they must not be tight otherwise you slow down the blood circulation of the limbs.

Why do I recommend using fins for snorkeling?

Because they make you less fatigued and each kick gives you a considerable boost that you could never reach barefoot. How are fins used? The movement must start from the hip and not from the knees in order to ensure a wide swing of the legs. To put on the fins easily, remember to get your feet wet before putting them on, indeed, it is better to wear them directly in the water.

Always remember that thesnorkeling equipmentit must always be washed with unsalted water after use. The salt, once dry, stiffens the silicone and plastics forcing them to a premature end. Take care of your snorkeling gear so that it can accompany you for many years.

After each use:

  • Wash the equipment with fresh water.
  • Let the equipment dry in the shade.
  • Never leave the equipment in the sun.

How to snorkel: tips

Once you have prepared the equipment as I have described to you, you have all the essential tools for snorkeling.

If you've never snorkeled, even on dry land, give it a try: put the snorkel in your mouth and use the aerator to breathe while holding your nose. Don't worry, when you snorkel your nose is covered by the mask so no water will enter your nose. Learn to inhale and exhale with the aerator ... if it seems difficult, don't worry, when you do it on dry land it is: paradoxically it will become easier to breathe with the snorkel with your face submerged in water!

Once in the water, before you start swimming ego snorkeling, remember to follow these advice:

  • Adjust the mask well, which should not be too tight but comfortable! If you tighten it a lot, you will not avoid fogging! I explained to you how to prevent the mask from misting in the article dedicated to how to choose a diving mask.
  • Make sure that the hair does not enter the edge of the mask, in this way you will avoid water infiltration into the mask. If so, use a hair band or pull your hair back by wetting it with water.
  • Fix the aerator to the elastic of the mask, on the right side.
  • Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and begin to inhale and exhale regularly.
  • Observe the seabed.
  • If you want to free dive, take a deep breath from the snorkel, remove the mouthpiece from your mouth and go free diving by giving yourself a push with the fins. When you surface, put the mouthpiece in your mouth and purge it using the residual air you have in your lungs (a good exhalation to eliminate the water that during your dive has penetrated the snorkel tube). This is a somewhat complex operation if you are a beginner, so if you don't feel like it, after your short apnea, emerge with your head, breathe, release the tube and resume snorkeling.

To appreciate the seabed, choose a well-colonized marine location: generally the marine fauna is found near rocky bottoms or cliffs.

Always snorkel with a friend to make this activity safer.
