Is calledCotinus coggygriaand is commonly known by the names:fog tree, cotino or scotano. Let's talk about a decorative shrub that can make a lot of spacesuggestive.

To make you understand the charm of thisplantI propose several photos and a video of the tree in the full explosion of its beauty.

Cotinus coggyria: plant, leaves and flowers

The speciesCotinus coggyriawe know it ascotinoorfog tree: in the USA it is calledsmoke tree, the reason? its large and particular inflorescences which can be up to 30 cm long. THEflowersare numerous and, during the flowering, completely cover the plant. Despite the particularity of the flowers, thefog treeit is cultivated above all for the beauty of its ornamental green-red leaves.

The flowers, on the other hand, have a yellow-pink and pink-purple color. When viewed en masse they have a smoke-like appearance, a thick flowery mist. The plant belongs to the Anacardiaceae family, native to southern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Himalayas.

L'fog treeit can reach a height of 5-7 meters. Its shrubby course makes it possible to create a flowering summer scrub.

The color of the leaves in autumn can be extremely varied. From peach to yellow, from purple to scarlet red. The leaves are rounded, similar to those of eucalyptus. They can have variegations and contrasting borders that become more evident in the autumn period. In the photo below, this is what a Cotinus coggyria leaf looks like in autumn.

Mist tree: cures

Those who want a garden with a particular charm cannot do without this unusual plant. Thecareto dedicate to them are not particular. Like any plant, the species tooCotinus coggyria necessity ofcarebut nothing that is not within your reach.

How to cure the fog tree? Here are some points you need to keep in mind for hercultivation.

  • The speciesCotinus coggyrianeeds a position in full sun.
  • The adult plant does not fear the cold and also tolerates the heat of the torrid months well.
  • Younger plants must be irrigated in summer and must be protected in winter but only in Northern Italy. In case of frosts, it is a good idea to lay a layer of straw at the base of the tree to protect the collar and roots. These precautions are only necessary for the first years after planting. Once the plant has taken root, it will no longer be needed.
  • If you don't have a location in full sun, make sure the plant can get at least 5 hours of direct light a day, as leaf health is at stake.
  • It needs fertilization only in the case of particularly arid and not very fertile soils.

Therefog plantit is cultivated for the beauty of its foliage and its particular flowering.

Mist tree: pruning

If you want to maximize the beauty of the leaves - which range from red to green - you can prune and fertilize ad hoc.

To make the plant rich in ornamental leaves, you can prune the tree of fog in autumn by cutting off the branches 30-40 cm from the base. In this way, the following year, thefog tree will not have one flowering but it will produce numerous very colorful leaves.

Cut leaves can be used for bouquet composition even if they have a shorter life than eucalyptus leaves.

How to grow the tree of fog

Growing the fog tree is easy. Once you have chosen the right position in the garden, you just have to continue with the planting.

As a precaution, dig a hole much deeper than necessary and add some compost or well-ripened manure. Loosen the soil well to allow optimal development and root rooting.

This plant is appreciated for its feathery-looking flowering. If you want to maximize flowering, every year, at the end of winter, you can fertilize the plant with a fertilizer rich in potassium. Conversely, if you want to limit flowering and enhance leaf production, you can use a universal fertilizer or a fertilizer for green plants where the N-P-K ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) is unbalanced in favor of the first element (N, nitrogen). Nitrogen, in fact, stimulates the production of jets and green parts (leaves and new branches). A fertilizer richer in potassium, on the other hand, will allow the plant to give abundant blooms.
